Most continuity shows once ESPN lists incoming transfers on rosters. Until then every team's returning share reads high, so a ranking would mostly reflect which rosters ESPN has updated.
Historically, teams returning under 40% of last season's minutes have fallen about 0.8 points of AdjEM on average (n=716 team-seasons, 2022–2026); teams returning 65%+ have gained about 2.2 (n=156). Preseason ratings don't apply this adjustment yet — the study found the effect real and directionally consistent on held-out seasons, but not yet precise enough on three training years to price into the projection. Opponent-adjusted, tempo-free ratings for every Division I team — points scored and allowed per 100 possessions and pace, each stripped of who the team has played. Preseason ratings start from last season, regressed toward the mean, and lean more on that prior the fewer games a team has played this year; in-season ratings update each morning off D1-vs-D1 games only. Four-factor tendencies (shooting, turnovers, rebounding, free-throw rate) sit alongside so a team's style is visible, not just its record.

What these numbers mean: model calibration.
